The qualifying round of the Tournament took place at Highfields on Sunday
19th October.
The first game against Leicestershire was quite physical, but the teams were
evenly matched. Derbyshire scored just before half time (Joe Kinsella) and
were unlucky to concede in the dying minutes of the game.
Notts were a well trained side and the Derbyshire boys were under pressure in
the first half, conceding 5 goals. However, after a talk from the coach (Jack
Wells) at half time, the team re grouped and the scoreline remained at
5-0.
Northants were the weakest team by far and had lost both their previous games quite heavily. The boys knew they needed to win this one by a lot to stand a chance of getting 2nd place. They played very well in the first half and were 4-0 up at half time. This time Northants regrouped and only conceded another couple of goals in the second half. Unfortunately this was not enough (it would have needed 9 to avoid penalty flicks!)
Scorers in this game were Joe Kinsella (3) Rob Wright (2) & Alex R.
Thus Derbyshire finished
third behind Leicestershire on goal difference, Notts winning the group. This
put the team in the lower division for the finals day, playing for 5th-8th
placings in the finals tournament.
The final round of the County Championships took place at Cannock on Sunday
23rd November, in absolutely appalling weather conditions!
The U14s had a 9am push back against Shropshire, with snow, sleet rain,
thunder and lightening, but played on!
Derbyshire scored two goals (Jacob Bullock, Joe Kinsella) early in the first
half, and the majority of the play for the rest of the game, but Shropshire
did manage to pull one goal back. The final game was against Worcestershire.
Again Derbyshire dominated the play, but did not manage to score until just
before half time (Jacob Bullock). A second goal (Dominic Bennett), but that
was to be all and the final score remained at 2-0 in Derbyshire’s
favour. Thus, with two wins, Derbyshire U14s finished top of the group.
Many thanks must go to U14 squad coach, Simon Clague, and to Jack Wells who stood in for Simon on 19th Oct. Without their support none of this would be possible. Thanks also to all the spectators and supporters who braved the elements to encourage the team.

Qualifying Tournament 19th Oct
At Highfields we followed onto the pitch from the U14s to play
Leicestershire. They had drawn their match so we started in hopeful mood. It
was a good match with Derbyshire winning quite comfortably 3 – 0
The next match was more of a worry. This was against Notts and the U14s had
been beaten 5 – 0. We knew that we had to start confidently and be
strong throughout .Ten minutes into the game following a quick pass from Leo
Watton, James Cozens scored. Derbyshire were in the lead! David Boddy scored
and then everyone willed the final whistle to blow. It did and Derbyshire had
won 2 – 0.Following such a boost we were on a high for our match
against Northants and won 6 – 1.

A great day and we finished top of the table. Well done to all.
We arrived at Cannock for Championship day with the sun shining –
sadly this would not last long.
The U14s had won both of their games so everyone was feeling buoyant.
Our first game was against Warwickshire. It was very close and we really made
hard work of it. The rain came down in torrents which did nothing to help. We
finally managed a 1 – 0 win.
Time to dry off and even change shirts - the old ‘dinner jackets
‘ are far too heavy to play in when that wet!
We played Staffordshire in the final and never showed our real strengths. It
was a heated game and tempers were frayed at times. The weather was appalling
with lashing rain and arctic winds. The final score was 4 – 1 to
Staffs.
Derbyshire U16s finished second in the region – a result to be very
proud of
We finally left Cannock after 6pm - a very long day!
Many thanks must go again to the coaches Simon Clague (U14s) and David Ross
(U16s). Without their support none of this would be possible. Thanks also to
the spectators and supporters for braving the arctic conditions.
